Abstract:
The concepts of lifelong learning and education were first articulated and developed by UNESCO in the 1970s. This paper traces the origins and rationale of these concepts and describes the dimensions of lifelong and life-wide learning with particular reference to the role of schools and colleges in developing relevant learning values and skills. Barriers to implementation of lifelong learning are explored, including prevailing approaches to teaching, assessment of learning, and curriculum planning, all of which often hinder the effective transfer of learning from formal educational institutions to real-life experiences in work, leisure, and family settings. The role of educational technology in fostering lifelong learning is briefly explored, and suggestions are offered for education practices that might render formal learning more pragmatic and sustainable.
